chapter 3 intro
Jack is becoming more savage and has this inner desire to kill. He is sort of peeling back the layers of society that were holding back this desire and this is described as ‘seductive’ is showing that Jack is going to become aggressive.. His appearance has also changed, ‘except for a pair of tattered shorts… he is naked.’ This suggests that as he is peeling back society, he is taking off the things that it gave him i.e clothes. As well as this he backs described as ’peeling’ and this suggests that his back or his fundamental values(being his backbone) are peeling away. We are also learning more about Jack’s personality. He is very self centred and self driven ‘the trail and the frustration took him again’. He is looking at his society formed self and hating it this is shown by Golding saying ‘for a minute became less a hunter than a furtive thing.. He is becoming more savage and more driven by this inner desire to kill and the ‘maddening seduction’ of meat and killing another living thing.

In our scene we decided to change some of Bottoms lines to reflect his personality. We made him forget the name Thisbe in the scene and Quince would say it for him. We thought this would be good because Bottom is always thinking about himself i.e Pyramus. This means he doesn't pay attention to the name Thisbe.
In our scene we thought that using clothes and props and costumes would help us reflect out characters. We made bottom wear brown to reflect the fact that he would become a donkey. We made snug wear earthy yellow because he was going to turn into a lion. We made Puck wear black because he is dark and menacing. We did this because we thought that it suited Shakespeare's style of hinting things before they happened and it just made our scene more rich.
In rehearsal we decided to have Titania on stage before we came in. We had her go on and lie underneath a table that the mechanicals would keep their almanac on. We thought this would be good because it makes hear somewhat concealed as she would want to be when she was sleeping. Also as there was stuff going on above her, this would add to the effect of her being invisible. We felt this was right as when Titania wakes up she says' what angel wakes me from my flowery bed'. Firstly this could've been ironic but secondly we believed that flowers meant on the ground and because the fairies had such a deep connection to nature, they would sleep on the ground. Another reason we thought this would work is because we thought that it would give her low status, sleeping under a table and this correlated with the fact that Oberon was about to humiliate her so she would have low status while she was betrothed to a donkey.
My view of Bottom as a character changed greatly as we further studied the play. We watched several portrayals of him and even saw a real live play. This changed my view as I thought him just to be a dumb guy with high self esteem. The portrayal that changed my view the most was Kevin Kline's Bottom. This was because it showed me that Bottom was a much more complex character and he only had high self esteem because he was good at weaving and every told him so. After this I developed my own version of him which is not very self aware, but aware of others, respected by his friends, but not always taken seriously.
Originally I thought that the when Titania said 'thou art as wise as thou art beautiful' it meant something completely different to what it did. I thought that Bottom thought that she was calling him beautiful and wise. This changed when I thought about the way he responded with 'not so neither'. I figured out that he didn't know that Titania was in love with him. He thought she was calling him ugly and stupid. This gave me some insight and changed the way felt about Bottom because this suggests that he is used to people calling him ugly and stupid.
Studying this unit changed the way I felt about Shakespeare. Most portrayals is of his plays being boring and a waste of time but now I think the opposite and I will always be enthusiastic about one of the greatest writers of all time.
Learning our lines was
made even more difficult then normal because Shakespearians did not speak like
we did. One of the ways I dealt with this paraphrasing. Paraphrasing was writing out
our lines in modern day English. This helped me learn my lines by learning
their meanings. I felt that this really helped me learned my motivations and
what my character was trying to achieve in each of his lines. Paraprhasing also made me
feel more confident because even if I forget my lines, I knew what my character
was trying to say.

Using words that shakespeare created in a paragraph
So I was walking down the street, laughable and in fairyland, but i was about to become fortunes fool. I came upon some strange bedfellows and they wanted me to buy a chicken that was as dead as a doornail but neither rhyme nor reason could overpower me and those bloodsucking eyesores could not get me to buy some chicken. A luck would have it they were men of steel and would not give up. It was circumstantial that they gave the chicken accommodation on the end of a fishing line which was an admirable feat for those punks. I then picked up something shiny on the ground and thought it was money but it was only a chocolate wrapper, all that glitters is not gold. As I stood up, I became pale-faced and went white as the driven snow for in front of me as a floating chicken. I did the natural human thing and urinated my self and then backed away from the unearthly thing, I thought 'what the dickens is going on?' Little did I know that I looked like a blinking idiot. Then to my amazement I saw that the chicken was on a string and not a unnatural super chicken at all. I became the laughing stock of the town, the game was up, every dog will have its day but this was not mine, the pranksters had been successful. I was late to work the next day and I was not rewarded for my tardiness, I had to nine own self be true, this one fell swoop would not be the be all and send all for I had planned a revenge most vile and zany.

The Big Man
He was getting tired of the
constant turmoil between the sun and the trees. The sun would always burn the
trees and the trees would complain and mock the sun. The big man was getting
weary of the constant loathing between the two sides.
The big man could not
understand why they engaged in this tumultuous activity. The trees were old and
wise and the sun was mighty and looked over all things. Yet still they went on
in this bickering and fighting. The big man wanted to end it once and for all.
That is just what he did. One
morning he left his home and stood between the two raging sides and he
explained the pointlessness of their hate and they listened but said they would
not stop. The big man transformed himself as a barrier between them. The sun
realised that it was lonely with out the trees and the trees began to miss the
sun. Thus the sun and the trees made peace but the big man remained as a
barrier between them. ‘Clouds’ is what people called him. He remained between
the sun and the trees just in case they would start their fighting again. So
ends the story of the big man.

A day in the life of a pencil (personification)
I feel used. What is my purpose in life other then to be used by others. I am a tool, nothing but something that benefits others, oh misery. My brother was chewed to death by a hairless ape, what fate will befall me. At night they come with their noisy machines and make me sharp again, it hurts but it keeps me alive, so I can be used another day. but without that machine I am pointless and if I am pointless then I am useless.I desire the touch of paper, it is relaxing for me. How long do I have left? How long until I feel the emptiness that is death? When I started off the days are long but now they are getting shorter I hear the etching away of life each day. Is this no better then being left in the dark dank desk with my friends, destined to die of boredom. But I cannot give up, if I fail the apes then I will be snapped but maybe that is better than tasting the bite of death around me and scratching away slowly. I'm getting shorter, what is the point to life, I feel used.

Worldshake but not worldcrack
WorldShaker: First post
The Book, World shaker is set in a clockwork/ mechanical developed past. The book is set in a large, mechanical machine, that is widely used for trading manufactured goods for raw materials. The large mechanical structure shows a “chain of being” with the higher and more “important” people at the higher parts of the structure. The lower filthies are based at the bottom, fueling the structure with coal and oiling the rollers, they are the reason the juggernaut functions. The upper class control them by monitoring the food supply and they spray them with burning steam. It is miles in length and width in every direction and most of its inhabitants have never been outside. The decks can house anything including, kitchens, laundries, cabins, workshops and even graveyards. This is almost the same as the black American history, with the black Americans being mistreated, and made to work at the “bottom” the same with slaves in Europe working in factories. The upper class, do not think that they are mistreating the filthies as they believe the filthies are not actual people and that they do not feel pain, similar to black American slaves. They force the filthies to live like animals and then they tease them about it.
Main character: Colbert (Col) Porpentine, His grandfather is the supreme Commander on the Juggernaut and second only to the Queen herself. Col has a great sense of duty and a loyalty to the queen. When he is disturbed by the filthy girl he calms himself down by repeating the words duty, Queen and Her Imperial Majesty. He has had a very sheltered upbringing and never has thought of the concept of lying or deception.
This book is exciting from the start when Col is wakened by guards searching for a filthy girl. He later discovers that this filthy is hiding under his bed. Something stops him turning her in and he hides her in his cupboard. The following morning his sister Gillabeth comes in and opens his cupboard and as she is about to find a Filthy in his cupboard there is nothing there. Colis surprised to find out she has used a pin on his jacket to pick the lock and escape in the night as he never thought of Filthies as cunning. This book is full of twists and turns, not even I predicted that Col would enjoy the time they had together and go in search of Riff again(to give her a book she wanted) and even more surprising was the school bully pushing Col down below.
I did predict that Riff would return and that Col would help her get back down below.
Take all this knowing I have only read half of the book so far but what a first half.
